St. Rose, Midwest Cancer Alliance offer screenings, tests and information at expo

(Great Bend, KS) - Dr. Ana Refinetti, St. Rose Ambulatory & Surgery Center surgeon, will team up with the Midwest Cancer Alliance (MCA) at this year’s Women’s Expo to offer free screenings and information to visitors.

The event is set for 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Great Bend Convention Center, 3017 10th.

Dr. Refinetti will be on hand to discuss general concerns and offer advice about seeking answers to more detailed questions, while MCA – the outreach arm of the University of Kansas Cancer Center - will provide physicians, technicians and equipment.

“We can talk about many topics such as breast screenings, risk factors for breast cancer and breast health in general,” Dr. Refinetti said. “Since we won’t be able to offer detailed information at the expo, we will suggest follow-up avenues for women to follow.

“In many instances, the follow-up is the most important thing,” she added. “We can help women know what questions to ask.”

Dr. Refinetti is the only breast surgery specialist in western Kansas but she hopes the word “surgery” doesn’t scare people off. Not every diagnosis leads to the operating room.

“Yes, I do work with oncologists when breast cancer is involved, but I also am quite involved in other cases that are benign; these could involve cysts, lumps or discharge,” she explained, noting plastic surgeons are called for cosmetic or reconstructive surgeries.

Since Dr. Refinetti is a general surgeon, she also performs a wide range of procedures, including those involving bowel resections, gall bladders and hernias, as well as the removal of skin lesions.

At the Women’s Expo, Dr. Refinetti will share information about getting a thorough risk assessment for breast cancer, especially when a family history is involved.

“When someone’s mother, sister and/or aunt has had breast cancer, a risk assessment is extremely important,” she said. “Depending on individual circumstances, we have to determine the best screening tool. It may be a mammogram but in some cases an MRI or sonogram is more appropriate.”

MCA representatives at the expo will include two dermatologists to give skin cancer screenings. They will supply a derma scan machine and the technician to operate it. Private exam areas will be available at the convention center.

In addition, MCA will provide the heel-test machine and a technician to run bone-density scans.

“This is a perfect example of MCA’s value to St. Rose and the community,” Dr. Refinetti said. “They are active in making sure we have the best possible health care right here at home. MCA is instrumental in bringing the services of a major medical center to central Kansans. The distance between big-city facilities and St. Rose is getting shorter all the time.”

Hope Krebill, MCA executive director, said she is gratified to see St. Rose’s strong commitment to the community.

“St. Rose does an outstanding job of providing information and support to cancer patients and their families,” Krebill said. “I am continually impressed by how well they implement the survivorship programs and services available through their MCA membership.”
