Mercy to offer workshops on nonviolent
communication
Three nonviolent communication (NVC) workshops facilitated by certified NVC
trainers will be offered to the public in October.
The workshops are sponsored by Mercy Regional Medical Center and will be held at
Trimble Hot Springs Starlight Room from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, 7 and
8. “Basic Nonviolent Communication” is scheduled Monday, Oct. 6; “NVC as
Spiritual Practice” is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 7; and “Mediation with NVC” will
be held Wednesday, Oct. 8. Cost is $20 for each session.
The workshops will be facilitated by Jim and Jori Manske of the Albuquerque
Center for Nonviolent Communication and Mary Mackenzie of the Flagstaff Center
for Compassionate Communication. They are being held in conjunction with other
NVC seminars for Mercy staff and employees that week.
Participants will learn how to use Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s model for
compassionate communication, a model used in healthcare, peacekeeping,
educational and economic settings worldwide. Workshop members will learn how to
deal with major blocks to communication such as demands, diagnoses and blaming,
receiving critical and hostile messages without taking them personally, giving
in or losing self-esteem.
Mercy has trained more than 150 of its employees in the nonviolent communication
during the past year as part of a mission initiative goal to improve
communication among hospital workers. “Clear communication among colleagues is
an asset to the hospital’s ability to provide continued outstanding patient and
family care. Exposing the community to NVC is a way of promoting a healthier
community,” said Mission Leader and NVC Coordinator Diana McKenna.
