The Orthopedic & Spine Center of Excellence at Mercy Regional Medical Center
History and Overview
The Orthopedic & Spine Center of Excellence began in 2005 when surgeons and staff at Mercy Medical Center began working collaboratively to improve clinical quality, patient satisfaction, and outcomes. The team reviewed the entire surgery process from the perspective of the patient, not the caregivers, and redesigned it to better meet patients' needs. In 2006, Mercy Medical Center became Mercy Regional Medical Center when it relocated to a brand new facility. In the new hospital, with its state-of-the-art technology, private patient rooms, and healing environment, the Center of Excellence has flourished.
Hallmarks of the Center of Excellence:
• Efficient care that is seamless between the surgeon's office and the hospital
• Standardization of clinical protocols from provider to provider
• Excellent clinical outcomes
• Valued patient amenities
• Exceptional customer service
Why is the Orthopedic & Spine Center of Excellence the Best Choice?
More joint replacement and spine surgeries are performed at Mercy Regional than at any other facility in Southwest Colorado. From January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2008, over 250 hip procedures, more than 400 knee procedures, and over 530 spine surgeries were performed.
Innovative procedures include minimally invasive total joint replacement, hip resurfacing, artificial disc replacement, less invasive lateral approach spinal fusion (X-LIF), partial knee replacement, and others. The hospital also has been selected to participate in several national clinical trials for next-generation devices.
The orthopedic-certified nurses and board-certified physicians who participate in the Center of Excellence are committed to research, education, and device innovation.
State-of-the-Art Intra-Operative and Diagnostic Technologies
The hospital has the latest surgical technologies including state-of-the-art operating theaters, digital radiography, electronic medical records, 64-slice CT, 1.5T high definition MRI, and more.

Extensive Patient Education
Personalized, thorough pre-operative education is essential, as well-informed patients have better outcomes. Because patients’ time is valuable, pre-operative education and testing is done in one day, so patients travel to the hospital only once. Patients receive notebooks that explain everything they need to know about their procedure and what to do before and after their surgery. Through extensive patient education and thorough communication, we ensure that our patients and their coaches know exactly what to expect and what is expected of them.
A Focus on Quality
We continuously monitor a host of quality indicators to ensure the level of care we provide is exceptional. Our goal is simple: excellent clinical care and continuous improvement. The entire team review quality data every quarter, identifying best practices and looking for opportunities to improve standards of care and customer service. By reducing variability in standards of care among participating providers, we are able to more quickly identify and adopt best practices. Low patient-to-nurse ratios ensure each patient gets the personalized attention and nursing care they deserve.
